Now run down, and falling apart, it hosts at least one noclip point. Entities and doleful creatures roam the keep's halls and passage ways.

Travels claim vast networks of tunnels and caves riddle the Chasm's cliffs, all connected to Bridge Keep.

The Howling Knight often rescues travels who accidentally noclip into the keep, bringing them to more civilized and safe regions.

Many thousands of years ago, the Backrooms existed only for the preservation of humans. Then the entities came, and started tormenting and driving humans from their native lands.

Finally, humans are nearly extinct in all the backrooms. Only one level known as the Frontrooms remains free of Backrooms entities. Any beings that want to preserve humanity seek to keep entities from establishing themselves in the Frontrooms.
Backrooms NPC: The Howling Knight2023-12-16T19:53:22+00:002025-04-22T03:03:58.769399+00:00Genehttp://backrooms.net/lore/author/Gene/http://backrooms.net/lore/backrooms-npc-the-howling-knight/
The Howling Knight's homeland was lost centuries ago to entity encroachment. Rumors and legends tell of the Howling Knight's homeland clinging to the cliffs beyond Bridge Keep. Now abandoned to all except the brave and foolish, all the ancient kingdom had fallen into decay or the chasm.

He patrols known noclip points, looking for travelers in need. It's his quest to see travels in distress (due to Backrooms entities) make it safely to civilization.

Some older travelers of the encroachment, know the Howling Knight less formally as Howlin Hank Whittacker.

The Howling Knight often gets asked how to get back to Earth. That puzzles him and constant confusedly calls "Earth" (AKA the Frontrooms) "Dirt". He considers "Dirt" a stupid name for a Backrooms level, and loudly proclaims that frequently. Even while calling "Dirt" a stupid name, he'd die before letting entities encroach on the last level that humanity thrives.

Many have asked the Howling Knight his age. His standard responds with, "I died centuries ago." He never explains himself further, and few dare ask further questions because of the dark mood this topic puts him in. Some speculate that due to the non-linear aspect of time in the Backrooms that he already know when and where he will die, and it literally is centuries ago. Others speculate that he refers to the fall of the old Chasm Kingdom that fell to entity encroachment centuries ago.
Level 33: Biomes and cultures of the Backrooms Chasm2023-12-16T02:13:22+00:002025-04-22T03:04:00.029385+00:00Genehttp://backrooms.net/lore/author/Gene/http://backrooms.net/lore/level-33-biomes-and-cultures-of-the-chasm/
Backrooms Level 33 is a bottomless and topless chasm.

The chasm extends farther than humans can explore in a lifetime. In some areas, it might remind you of the infinite stairways of Escher. In other areas, the local civilization might take on a style similar to the cliff dwellers of Arizona's past. In still other regions, it invokes the mythical stone cities hanging impossibly from the undersides of massive overhangs. In still other areas, you feel as if the builders of Petra made a fantastic second go at it here.

The canyon spans widths similar to the Grand Canyon, and then narrows down to that of a slot canyon. The chasm extends off in seemingly infinite branches, sometimes intersecting with other branches. The biomes range from rugged granite, to desert sandstone, to alpine forest.

Traveling where no carved road or path exists often requires dangerous climbs and is impossible most non-native pack animals.

At night, stars appear in the exposed sky above, and what appear like stars appear in the depths. Though, the "stars" in the depths seem to move around slowly. The theories abound as to whether those are stars in the depths, or reflections of the stars above, or maybe tears of those whose loved ones have fallen into the depths.

The Chasm's height feels infinite, as does the depth. Possibly, no one has reached the top because of the altitude and thinness of the air. Others have attempted to reach the bottom, but never returned.

The walls are sometimes narrowly spaced, and sometimes separated by miles. No one has ever seen the top or the bottom of the chasm.

One of the many unique dangers of the chasm lies in the sudden flashfloods down its walls. Somewhere up at the top, there a great flood happens due to heavy rain or some other event, and comes flooding and falling down the sides of the chasm. If the unwary traveller gets caught away from shelter durring these events, then they risk being washed to the unexplored depths. All residents of the chasm agree that this means certain death.

Though these floods pose serious risks to the residents of the chasm, they also provide life. The irregular flash flood waters get captured by a network of channels that direct the excess water into massive cisterns. These cisterns become the source of water for farming, drinking, and bathing.

The sole tell that these floods are on the way happens when drizzling mist falls from the heights, warning that the flood will strike soon. The residents warn, "Beware the mist."
