Level 33: Biomes and cultures of the Backrooms Chasm

Backrooms Level 33 is a bottomless and topless chasm.

The chasm extends farther than humans can explore in a lifetime. In some areas, it might remind you of the infinite stairways of Escher. In other areas, the local civilization might take on a style similar to the cliff dwellers of Arizona's past. In still other regions, it invokes the mythical stone cities hanging impossibly from the undersides of massive overhangs. In still other areas, you feel as if the builders of Petra made a fantastic second go at it here.

The canyon spans widths similar to the Grand Canyon, and then narrows down to that of a slot canyon. The chasm extends off in seemingly infinite branches, sometimes intersecting with other branches. The biomes range from rugged granite, to desert sandstone, to alpine forest.

Traveling where no carved road or path exists often requires dangerous climbs and is impossible most non-native pack animals.

At night, stars appear in the exposed sky above, and what appear like stars appear in the depths. Though, the "stars" in the depths seem to move around slowly. The theories abound as to whether those are stars in the depths, or reflections of the stars above, or maybe tears of those whose loved ones have fallen into the depths.

The Chasm's height feels infinite, as does the depth. Possibly, no one has reached the top because of the altitude and thinness of the air. Others have attempted to reach the bottom, but never returned.
