Level 79: Urban Decayed

The infinite abandoned city of Level 79 silently decays while lonely structures crumble. Noxious mists from evaporating pools of toxic waste twist through concrete canyons slowly filling with vines and clover. Towering entities lurk in burrows under decaying, towers of concrete, waiting patiently to hunt you in the night.

Overview:

Backrooms Level 79: Urban Decay manifests as an infinite, post-apocalyptic cityscape. Level 79 contains no suburbs, just endless concrete canyons of an abandoned city. Most buildings tower anywhere from 5-30 floors above the broken, pothole-riddled streets. All buildings and there facades crumble, being covered with vines and even small trees and bushes. Everything falling to dust, but not there yet.

When wild winds do not blow down the concrete canyons, occasional creaks and groans from the collapsing buildings rumble through the cityscape. Occasionally, buildings, bridges or roads collapse partially or fully without warning. The decay makes all of this crumbling city dangerous.

Rain falls frequently, streaming down sides and through the abandoned buildings forming toxic purple puddles, pools, and rivulets down the gutters and streets. Toxic purple pooling waters contain only one of the dangers of this city. The other danger lurks in giant-sized burrows under the collapsing buildings -- Green Sentinels.

The buildings weakened from neglect threat collapse at all times, but their dilapidated state grows much worse when the Green Sentinels dig their burrows under the foundations. The Green Sentinels stand from 3-5 stories in height. They hide during the days, but hunt travelers during dark stormy days or sunless nights. Due to the extreme danger of this Backrooms level, an oppressive loneliness pervades it.

Survivors of Level 79 often speak of the oppressive loneliness that pervades this place. The endless rows of empty buildings, the silent streets, and the ever-present danger of the entities create an atmosphere of constant tension and isolation. It's a world where the past whispers of a civilization long gone, and the present is a never-ending struggle for survival in the face of an environment that is both physically and psychologically toxic.

Environment:

Noxious mist chokes the air you breath, here. Puddles and pools of toxic waste that dot the crumbling urbanscape, evaporate into a subtle purple mist that float in small clouds around this urban desolation. Breathing does not harm you, but heavy breathing caused by running, or terror, will make any traveler start coughing and wheezing.

Entities:

Green Sentinels: These towering humanoids lurk in massive burrows they dig under the remains of the city on level 79. Often their burrows cause the collapse of roads and skyscrapers that are already dilapidated. The green sentinels stay hidden until sunset begins. Then they begin to emerge, staying to shadows until direct sunlight is no longer a threat.

Standing at full height, on a city street, these vine-covered shapes easily rival 11-13 story buildings. Instead of eyes, they have two glowing purple orbs that focus like search lights on whatever or whoever thy look at. Any travelers grappled by these monstrosities disappear into their vine-covered mouths.

Object Interactions:

  • Crumbling Infrastructure: All buildings and bridges could crumble or collapse. Use care when selecting safe areas to hide from the green sentinels.

Known Strategies/Precautions:

  • Find small enclosed spaces to hide during the night. Only go out and about during full daylight hours.
  • Some edible canned and dehydrated food still exists in abandoned store shelves, if you do enough searching.
  • Theory has it that an industrial strength, full-spectrum spot light could harm or kill green sentinels.
